DIY: Disney Watercolor Art

This morning I sat down to paint. I probably should have been taking care of other things, like scheduling someone to fix my new back door that is already leaking. But I had another water-related project in mind. I recently discovered some fun watercolor prints on Pinterest and I was feeling inspired. My to-do list can wait. Maybe yours can too?

Cinderella Castle from Vivid Editions. See below for link.

Here’s one of the prints I mentioned. It’s from a company called Vivid Editions. Isn’t it fun? I love the bright colors and splattered effect. I haven’t ordered anything yet, but the site offers a  fun variety of Disney-inspired prints at reasonable prices. For now, I’m using it as a source of inspiration.

Painting Cinderella Castle

The first step was to find some subjects. I used a photo to sketch the outline of the castle.

Then I looked through my Disney soundtracks and movie covers for other options. The goal was to find easily recognizable shapes that are somewhat easy to draw.

If you don’t like sketching, you could always trace from another image or print something from online. (Hint: Google Easy Castle Outlines or Easy Disney Outlines)

Once I had a few drawings, I started painting. Painting is fun.

Painting MoanaI love water color because you can easily blend the colors to cover mistakes. Well, most of them.

Once the shapes were painted and somewhat dry, I unleashed my inner Jackson Pollock.

Not really. It was too windy to paint outside and I was too lazy to put down a covering to collect the splattered paint, so it ended up more like polite little jabs. If you have the time and space or the ability to overlook self-created messes, then go for it! I’m guessing it will be an awesome stress reliever.

After the splattering, I was done. Pretty fun morning. I could see this same technique working well with initials for kids’ rooms or wedding date wall hangings for newlyweds. It’s fairly easy and a lot of fun, even if you don’t end up hanging the result anywhere but your fridge.

Time to call the repair guy. At least I can smile at my painting while I’m dialing.

Add a little watercolor magic to your world.
